Bujumbura, Burundi – More than 700 prisoners of the central prison of Mpimba including 200 women were released by the presidential pardon this Friday, March 16, 2018.
On this occasion, the Minister of Justice Aimée Laurentine KANYANA thanked the President of the Republic for this act. She asked pardoned prisoners to live peacefully with their neighbors after their release. She warned them, however, and told them that whoever commits the same crime again will no longer benefit from the presidential pardon.
Minister Aimée Laurentine asked the Ministry of the Interior as well as various civil societies to supervision and provide civic lessons to those pardoned for their better integration into the society.
Aimée Laurentine appealed to magistrates to make a lot of effort to reduce the jail population. She also invited suspects and offenders to facilitate the task of magistrates by pleading guilty if they know they are guilty so that their sentences can be reduced or commuted. The released prisoners were transported for free to their home provinces by the National Police trucks.
It`s worth mentioning that the central prison of Mpimba has a capacity of housing 800 prisoners but has more than 3,000 prisoners now.
