Bujumbura, Burundi – Despite the Burundi governments efforts to thwart panhandling phenomenon in the capital city Bujumbura, panhandlers can still be seen in the capital city Bujumbura. They are from several categories; elderly people, school-age children, adults living with infirmity and even active adults who have neither physical nor mental disabilities. Among them, there are young women who are apparently in good health.
All these beggars approach tourists and demand for money either on the roadside or at different bus-stops in the capital of Bujumbura. Some among those active panhandlers flee when they see journalists taking pictures or video recording. Those with kids sleep on the sidewalk. It worth mentioning that begging is a criminal act punishable by the Burundi criminal law.
